The Shortest Privacy Policy You’ll Ever Read
Most privacy policies exist to explain what data companies collect and how they use it. This one exists to tell you that we don’t collect your data at all.
What We Collect
Nothing.
That’s not hyperbole or a marketing claim. Expensica is designed with a technical architecture that makes data collection impossible:
- Your financial data exists only within your Obsidian vault
- It never touches our servers
- We have no analytics, no telemetry, no usage tracking
- We don’t even know who installed our plugin or how many people use it
Why This Matters
Most software takes your data and promises not to misuse it. We built Expensica so we can’t access your data, even if we wanted to.
The difference is significant. A promise can be broken. A technical limitation cannot.
Local Storage
All your transaction data is stored in a folder called expensica-data within your Obsidian vault. This data stays on your device. It syncs only through whatever sync method you’ve set up for Obsidian itself (like Obsidian Sync, Dropbox, or iCloud).
Third-Party Services
Since we don’t collect any data, we don’t share anything with third parties. There are no analytics services, no advertising networks, no data brokers.
Expensica doesn’t even communicate with the internet. It’s a fully local plugin.
The Business Model Question
You might wonder how we make money if we’re not selling your data. The answer is, we don’t, really. Expensica is a free, open-source project. If users find it valuable, they can choose to support development through voluntary donations.
This model aligns our incentives with yours. We succeed by making a tool that’s genuinely useful to you, not by monetizing your personal information.
Changes to This Policy
If we ever change this policy, it would only be to clarify language, not to change our fundamental approach to privacy. We’re committed to zero data collection.
